Pipes Are Banging When I Use My Appliance. What Can I Do?

It is laundry day, and you are starting to dread it each time because it always sounds like a percussion band. As the water pressure changes this can cause pipes to jerk which happens often in modern appliances because they work so quickly.  If the pipes are moving around because they are not fastened tightly it may cause banging noises.  If this banging continues it could cause damage or wear out the pipes.  Not to mention it can also be very annoying to listen to.

To prevent the pipes from banging, you can do one of three things:

  1. Pipe Straps: Pipe straps are an option when you run into this problem of pipes banging. Any store that sells plumbing supplies should have pipe straps available to purchase. Locate the pipes creating the noise and add the pipe straps to hold them in place.

  1. Water Hammer Arrestors: Unfortunately, the pipes may be inaccessible to you making it hard for you to install pipe straps. If this be the case, you can choose to install water hammer arrestors.  The pipes would not jerk or bang because the shock absorbers cushion the change in water pressure.

  1. Call a Plumber: Plumbers are highly knowledgeable with instances such as these that may be occurring in your household or business.  They could investigate the problem for you instead of you having to do it yourself as well as take the time to install one of the solutions that will help solve your problem.
