What To Do When You Have a Clogged Toilet

When you have a toilet that is clogged in your household or business it can create a major “headache” for you especially when a lot of people depend on the use of that restroom

We here at A-1 feel it is our pleasure to give you the ins and outs of what to do when facing a clogged toilet in your home or business.

1st: Do Not Keep Flushing

Yes, sometimes all a clog needs are an extra flush to get moving but overflowing is a huge risk when someone flushes a clogged toilet and that creates a nasty unnecessary mess.  It is better to wait till the clog is loose before attempting to flush.

2nd: Close the Toilet Flapper

The toilet flapper is what allows water to flow from the toilets tank into the toilet bowl, so it is key to lift the back part of the toilet up and close the toilet flapper.  When you make sure to close the toilet flapper securely you are also ensuring the toilet will not overflow.  However, for extra protection you can also elect to shut off the water to the toilet temporarily.

(Flapper is Bottom Arrow)

3rd: Add Water

For the toilet bowl to be sufficiently plunged it needs enough water to do so. It is important to add water before plunging to make the process easier because lack of water will not provide the right amount of suction needed when using a plunger.  Using hot water can be beneficial as an addition because it can have the added effect of effectively melting some of the fats out of the clog.  Also, there has been reports that people have seen a greater amount of success during plunging when they also pour a generous amount of dish washing liquid or shampoo into the toilet.

4th: Use a Plunger

When using a plunger, you need to ensure the mouth of the plunger goes around the toilet drain and proceed to plunge away.  While being careful you want to plunge vigorously for best results.  If you see that the clog starts to loosen up, you can then try flushing your toilet to aid with the process of unclogging the toilet but make sure you are prepared to grab the flapper in case the toilet starts to back up again.

5th: Call a Plumber
